Ice melt

Ice melt must be applied on the ground for it to be effective. Ideally, this should happen in anticipation of a storm. This isn't always feasible, of course, so the product should be spread before precipitation freezes or as soon as possible thereafter, or immediately after snow has been cleared. ***Protect your concrete from the damaging effects of salt. It should not be used on concrete, as it causes damage (especially recent installations) You should use an ice melt product that contains calcium chloride that is less harmful and follow manufacturers’ guidelines.

Home Maintenance Winter Checklist:

  • Roof: Check roof and around vents, skylights and chimneys for leaks. Repair as needed
  • Gutters: Clean gutters and leaders of leaves and twigs.
  • Fireplace: Clean the fireplace and flue
  • HVAC: Schedule maintenance and change filters.
  • Detectors: Change batteries for carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
  • Water Heater: Drain water from the tank. Doing so, removes sediment from the bottom of the tank.
  • Exterior Hose Bibbs: If you don't have a frost-free faucet, it should be drained of all water now that winter is here.

Community News:
